A place of hope for the homeless
Grace Chapel is now offering homeless people the opportunity to have showers and to wash and dry their clothes.
The new project, called Hope Hub, has involved the installation of showers, washing machines and dryers in the Grace Chapel premises. These facilities are open every Sunday from 4.30pm to 7.00pm at Grace Chapel. Grace Chapel is in the former Yorkshire Bank Building at 89 New Square, Chesterfield. However access to the showers and washing facilities is via the entrance on Rose Hill.
Food is also available at the same time – see details
St Thomas’ Church, Brampton has acquired the former Ponderosa Guest House. Now named Hope House, the property sits on the corner of Derby Road and St Augustine’s Road. The project is a key part of St Thomas’ support of Christian responses towards helping the homeless.
When fully operational Hope House will provide accommodation for up to 12 clients. These are people who are either moving out of homelessness or are vulnerable to becoming homeless. The project works closely with both statutory and voluntary housing and welfare services to ensure each resident has the best possible chance of success in the future. Pre-assessments take place prior to a client taking up residency. These make sure that each client is suitable for housing in the House. The assessment also checks that their life aspirations, together with their health and well-being needs are understood and can be supported by the emerging Christian community centred around the project. In effect Hope House offers the opportunity of a ‘half-way’ house for clients to live in a place where they can (re)gain basic life skills which will enable them to thrive in regular society.
Hope House comprises of a communal living area, office and counselling room, shared kitchen and 9 individual bedrooms. In addition the centre incorporates a two-person flat. This will help people in the final stages of preparing for independent living.
